Buying DVC: How to choose the right property to meet your family needs

An important aspect of becoming a Disney Vacation Club member is picking your home resort. And with so many resorts to choose from, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. In this post, we’ll talk about the factors you need to consider so you can choose the right home resort for you and your family.

The importance of your home resort

If you’re new to Disney Vacation Club and timeshares, you might be wondering why your home resort is important in the whole equation. The simple answer to that is it affects your membership and how you use it. You can read more about the importance of choosing the right home resort here.

Factors to consider

The following aspects are things you need to take note of when you’re exploring resorts and packages.

  1. Purchase price of points – Disney Vacation Club resorts not only differ in amenities and theme. The initial purchase price of points also vary. Some resorts cost more than others, while some are considerably more affordable.
  2. Annual maintenance fees – Initial purchase price aside, you also need to consider the annual maintenance fees of a resort. Unlike the purchase price, you’ll need to cover this year after year. So don’t get taken with a resort that has a low initial purchase price, because the annual maintenance fees might be higher than other resorts.
  3. Points cost – In order to stay at a certain accommodation in a Disney Vacation Club resort, you’ll need to spend some points, and these resorts charge differently.
  4. Years on the contract – Another thing that differs among Disney Vacation Club resorts is the ownership and its expiration. For example: ownership at Beach Club Villas expires in 2042, while the contracts in other resorts such as Polynesian Villas last until 2066.
  5. Location – If being located in close proximity to a desired theme park or entertainment area is high up your list, then you certainly need to consider a resort’s location. Some resorts are walking distances to the Disney Park, some are a drive or bus to the Parks or entertainment, and others are outside the Disney Resort area (such as, Vero Beach, Hilton Head, or Aulani)
  6. Resort theme, rooms, and amenities – Would you like a more tropical flair to your DVC home resort, or something entirely different? The overall theme, look, types of accommodations available, recreation, and amenities of a resort is also worth considering, as it affects the whole vacation experience.
  7. Resale value – At this stage, selling your DVC membership is not on the plan, but considering a resort’s resale value is something worth your time.
